Intermediate First Aid replaces Standard First Aid — a comprehensive course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training that will leave you feeling secure and confident to respond quickly and effectively to any emergency situation, with CPR/AED Level C included, You will learn the lifesaving skills needed to respond to a first aid emergency and how to manage illness and injuries until emergency medical services (EMS) arrive. Skills covered include first aid, relief of choking in adults, children and infants, and recognizing and responding to sudden cardiac arrest.

What this course covers

Intermediate First Aid and CPR/AED is a comprehensive course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training that will leave you feeling secure and confident to respond quickly and effectively to any emergency situation. You will learn the lifesaving skills needed to respond to a first aid emergency and how to manage illness and injuries until emergency medical services (EMS) / a professional rescuer arrive at the scene.

Instructors use presentations and skills demonstrations to teach critical skills and provide hands-on practice sessions. Participants receive coaching and feedback to facilitate their learning experience in a fun, engaging and dynamic environment.

First Aid with CPR & AED courses were developed in accordance with the recommendations from the International First Aid and Resuscitation Guidelines. This course meets legislation requirements for provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards (WSIB) and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines. It is for those who have a duty to respond to first aid and cardiac emergencies because of work requirements, or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home and in the community.

Intended audience

This course is for anyone who wants comprehensive first aid and CPR/AED training for the workplace or home — including those who have a duty to respond to first aid and cardiac emergencies because of work requirements, and anyone who wants more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home and in the community.

It meets Ontario WSIB workplace requirements under Regulation 1101 for staff who need Intermediate First Aid (Standard First Aid) certification with CPR/AED Level C.

What the course delivers

Comprehensive first aid plus CPR/AED Level C for adults, children and infants in a single course.

Relief of choking and sudden cardiac arrest response across all age groups.

Wound care, bleeding control, tourniquet use, shock and breathing emergency response.

Head, neck and spinal injuries, bone/muscle/joint injuries, sudden medical and environmental emergencies, and poisons.

Hands-on practice with coaching and feedback from a certified instructor.

Two ways to take Intermediate First Aid

Choose the format that fits your schedule. Both options cover the same comprehensive Intermediate First Aid content with CPR/AED Level C included.

Blended

Online + in-class skills

The blended learning course consists of an online component and an in-classroom component. The online portion allows you to review difficult topics in community CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) use at your own pace and improve your performance at the hands-on skill session. Upon completion of the online CPR & First Aid portion, you must complete a hands-on CPR training skills session with a certified instructor in the classroom.

Blended Intermediate First Aid takes approximately 16 hours total, including skills practice and testing; about 6.5-7.5 hours online and 8 hours in class.

Online training time varies depending on the learner.

In-person skills check with a certified instructor.

3-year Intermediate First Aid / CPR with AED completion card on successful completion.

Fully instructor-led

Private classes only

In-classroom training means you are with a certified instructor for your entire learning experience. The instructor teaches community CPR and AED using presentations and skills demonstrations, observing participants and providing guidance and feedback to facilitate the learning experience in a fun and friendly environment.

In-classroom Intermediate First Aid takes 2 days, approximately 8 hours each day, including skills practice and testing.

Instructor present for the full course with live presentations and skills demonstrations.

Hands-on first aid, CPR and AED practice with real-time coaching and feedback.

3-year Intermediate First Aid / CPR with AED completion card on successful completion.

What you will be able to do

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

Identify the most important action steps to effectively respond to a life-threatening emergency situation.

Remove disposable gloves safely.

Demonstrate how to do a primary assessment following life-threatening conditions such as a heart attack, stroke, difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding and shock.

Demonstrate turning the victim into the recovery position.

Describe and demonstrate how to help a conscious and an unconscious victim with an obstructed airway.

Use an epinephrine pen.

Identify early signs and symptoms of a heart attack and stroke.

Describe and demonstrate how to control bleeding, bandaging and use of a tourniquet.

Recognize the signs and symptoms of shock and describe how to minimize the risk of shock.

Describe how high-quality CPR improves survival and recognize when someone needs CPR.

Demonstrate high-quality CPR for an adult, child and infant, including two-rescuer CPR.

Demonstrate how to give rescue breaths using mouth-to-mouth or a mask for all age groups.

Demonstrate how to use an AED on an adult, child and infant.

Provide first aid care for common injuries and illnesses in the workplace.

List the general principles for providing care to burn victims.

Describe and demonstrate the guidelines to follow when moving an injured person with broken bones.

Recognize medical emergencies such as seizures, diabetes and drug overdose.

Describe what precautions should be taken to prevent heat- and cold-related illnesses.

Identify the general principles of care for poison-related emergencies.

Describe the general care for common injuries and illnesses of the muscles, joints and bones.

Intermediate First Aid (CPR/AED Level C)

Full comprehensive Intermediate First Aid certification with CPR/AED Level C included. Choose blended or in-classroom delivery. Meets Ontario WSIB workplace requirements under Regulation 1101 and follows the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.
