What this course covers

Evidence-based research has led to significant changes in both the content and design of the Heart & Stroke ACLS training program. Using the latest evidence-based design and content, the course delivers a high-quality training program that fulfills cardiopulmonary resuscitation requirements for many medical professionals.

The course takes healthcare provider training to the next level by highlighting the importance of high-performing teams, systems of care, and recognition and intervention of cardiopulmonary arrest, immediate post-cardiac arrest care, acute dysrhythmia, stroke, and acute coronary syndrome.

Intended audience

The Heart & Stroke Foundation ACLS certification course is for medical professionals who either supervise or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, and critical care units — such as physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, paramedics and others who need an ACLS course completion.

If you are a medical professional who will use ACLS skills in your practice, it is highly recommended that you take the ACLS course. Those who meet the prerequisites and pass the course receive an ACLS certification card valid for 2 years.

Method of delivery

Two ways to take ACLS

Choose the format that fits your schedule. Both options are led through the Heart & Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Heart Association.

Blended

Online + in-class skills

The blended learning course consists of an online component and an in-classroom component. Learners move through ACLS concepts at their own pace before attending a hands-on skills session in the classroom.

Private classes only

In-classroom training means you are with a Heart & Stroke Instructor for the entire learning experience. The instructor-led course uses video presentations and skills practice, with the instructor observing and providing guidance and feedback in a supportive environment.

What you will be able to do

Upon completion of this certification course, the participant will be able to:

Respond to a cardiovascular emergency using Primary and Secondary Assessments.

Perform high-quality BLS skills with emphasis on effective chest compressions and early defibrillation.

Recognize and stabilize patients experiencing acute coronary events and strokes.

Recognize and stabilize patients experiencing arrhythmias.

Understand ACLS pharmacology for use in cardiac and respiratory emergencies.

Recognize and stabilize patients experiencing a respiratory arrest.

Apply ACLS algorithms and flowcharts to clinical scenarios.

Provide early management of cardiac arrest with effective resuscitation team dynamics.

Monitor a patient’s physiologic response during CPR and give real-time feedback to improve outcomes.

Prerequisites

A current Heart & Stroke Foundation BLS course completion card.

BLS renewal can be completed prior to the start of the course.

Complete a mandatory Precourse Self-Assessment.

It is advised that you read the textbook in its entirety prior to the course.
