Basic First Aid

Basic First Aid replaces Emergency First Aid — a basic one-day course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training for the workplace or home, with CPR/AED Level C included. You will learn the lifesaving skills needed to respond to a first aid emergency and how to manage illness and injuries until emergency medical services (EMS) arrive. Skills covered include first aid, relief of choking in adults, children and infants, and recognizing and responding to sudden cardiac arrest.

What this course covers

Instructors use presentations and skills demonstrations to teach critical skills and provide hands-on practice sessions. Participants receive coaching and feedback to facilitate their learning experience in a fun, engaging and dynamic environment.

First Aid with CPR & AED courses were developed in accordance with the recommendations from the International First Aid and Resuscitation Guidelines. This course meets legislation requirements for provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards (WSIB) and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.

It is for those who have a duty to respond to a cardiac and/or respiratory emergency because of work requirements, or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home and in the community.

Intended audience

This course is for anyone who wants basic first aid and CPR/AED training for the workplace or home — including those who have a duty to respond to a cardiac or respiratory emergency because of work requirements, and anyone who wants more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home and in the community.

It meets Ontario WSIB workplace requirements under Regulation 1101 for staff who need Basic First Aid (Emergency First Aid) certification with CPR/AED Level C.

Method of delivery

Two ways to take Basic First Aid

Choose the format that fits your schedule. Both options cover the same one-day Basic First Aid content with CPR/AED Level C included.

Blended

Online + in-class skills

Complete the online first aid portion at your own pace, followed by an in-class hands-on skills session. The online portion uses a user-friendly, interactive platform that gives you control over the learning experience — study anywhere with internet access.

Blended Basic First Aid takes approximately 8 hours total, including skills practice and testing; about 4 hours online and 3.5–4.5 hours in class.
Online training time varies depending on the learner.
In-person skills check with a certified instructor.
3-year Basic First Aid / CPR with AED completion card on successful completion.

Classroom

Fully instructor-led

Learn with a certified instructor for the entire experience. The instructor teaches first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation with rapid defibrillation using presentations and skills demonstrations, observing participants and providing guidance and feedback in a fun, friendly environment.

In-classroom Basic First Aid takes approximately 7 hours, including skills practice and testing.
Instructor present for the full course with live presentations and skills demonstrations.
Hands-on first aid, CPR and AED practice with real-time coaching and feedback.

What you will be able to do

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

Identify the most important action steps to effectively respond to a life-threatening emergency situation.
Remove disposable gloves safely.
Demonstrate how to do a primary assessment following life-threatening conditions such as a heart attack, stroke, difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding and shock.
Demonstrate turning the victim into the recovery position.
Describe and demonstrate how to help a conscious and an unconscious victim with an obstructed airway.
Use an epinephrine pen.
Describe and demonstrate how to control bleeding and bandaging.
Recognize the signs and symptoms of shock and describe how to minimize the risk of shock.
Identify early signs and symptoms of a heart attack and stroke.
Describe how high-quality CPR improves survival and recognize when someone needs CPR.
Demonstrate high-quality CPR for an adult, child and infant, including two-rescuer CPR.
Demonstrate how to give rescue breaths using mouth-to-mouth or a mask for all age groups.
Demonstrate how to use an AED on an adult, child and infant.
Provide first aid care for common injuries and illnesses.

Course format & time

Blended Basic First Aid takes approximately 8 hours total, including skills practice and testing; about 4 hours online and 3.5–4.5 hours in class.
In-classroom Basic First Aid takes approximately 7 hours, including skills practice and testing.
Recertification is approximately 5 hours in class, or 4 hours online plus 3–4 hours in class for blended.
Online training time varies depending on the learner.
Certification

Course completion card

Upon successful completion of this course, students receive a CPR with AED certificate (digital certificate) and a CPR with AED course completion card that is valid in Ontario for 3 years.

This course is WSIB-approved under Regulation 1101. Basic First Aid replaces Emergency First Aid under Ontario’s updated WSIB First Aid Program. The completion card is valid in Ontario for 3 years.

Basic First Aid (CPR/AED Level C)

Full one-day Basic First Aid certification with CPR/AED Level C included. Choose blended or in-classroom delivery. Meets Ontario WSIB workplace requirements under Regulation 1101 and follows the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.

Re-certification Basic First Aid (CPR/AED Level C)

For holders of a current Basic First Aid (Emergency First Aid) card who need to recertify. Confirm renewal eligibility before booking.
