Basic Life Support (BLS)

VIVICPR delivers the Basic Life Support (BLS) course through the Heart & Stroke Foundation. The course trains healthcare providers to recognize life-threatening emergencies, perform a primary assessment, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver ventilations and use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Course overview

What this course covers

In the classroom, instructors provide interactive clinical scenarios and learning stations to prepare participants for real-life emergency situations. The course is designed to build participant confidence to effectively perform high-quality CPR and increase knowledge in BLS skills.

Our CPR training courses were developed in accordance with the recommendations from the International First Aid and Resuscitation Guidelines. This CPR course meets requirements for provincial regulatory bodies and other colleges and includes the latest CPR guidelines.

Intended audience

This course is a requirement for healthcare professionals, including nursing staff, care aides and dental professionals. Pre-hospital care providers — which may include firefighters, paramedics, lifeguards and ski patrol — also take BLS.

If you are a healthcare provider or student who will use BLS skills in your practice, this course provides the certification required by hospitals, regulatory colleges and academic programs.

Blended

Online + in-class skills

Blended courses provide flexibility, convenience and consistency. The learning includes an online portion and an in-class session, so you can study anywhere with internet access, at your own pace.

Interactive online module completed at your own pace, anywhere with internet access.
Shorter in-class session focused on hands-on skills testing.
In-person skills check with a certified Heart & Stroke Instructor.
Same 1-year Heart & Stroke Foundation certification as the classroom option.

Classroom

Fully instructor-led

In-classroom courses mean participants are with a Heart & Stroke Instructor for their entire learning experience, in a fun and friendly environment with guidance and feedback throughout.

Instructor present for the full course with live presentations and skills demonstration.
Hands-on CPR and rapid defibrillation practice with real-time coaching.
Scheduled in-class sessions across our GTA training locations.
Same 1-year Heart & Stroke Foundation certification as the blended option.

Additional information

What you will be able to do

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

Remove disposable gloves safely.
Demonstrate a rapid assessment of life-threatening conditions such as cardiac arrest, heart attack, stroke, difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding and shock.
Describe and demonstrate how to help a conscious and an unconscious victim with an obstructed airway.
Use an epinephrine pen.
Describe how to perform effective chest compressions and two-rescuer high-quality CPR skills.
Demonstrate how to give rescue breaths using first aid equipment such as oxygen therapy, a bag-valve mask and mouth-to-mouth.
Demonstrate how to use an AED on an adult, child and infant.

Course format & time

The BLS Provider course takes approximately 4 hours to complete, including skills practice and skills testing.
The BLS recertification course takes approximately 2–4 hours to complete.
Certification

Course completion card

Upon successful completion of this course, students receive a CPR with AED certificate (digital certificate) and a CPR with AED course completion card. The BLS certification is issued by the Heart & Stroke Foundation and is valid for 1 year.

VIVICPR delivers this course through the Heart & Stroke Foundation. The completion card is issued by the Heart & Stroke Foundation and is valid for 1 year.
