Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

The Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course teaches strategies to diagnose pediatric emergencies and provide advanced treatment. Scenario-based materials and a team approach cover pediatric emergency management from the early minutes through patient stabilization and/or transfer, in or out of the hospital. VIVICPR delivers this course through the Heart & Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Heart Association.

What this course covers

The Heart & Stroke Foundation PALS training program builds on BLS techniques with advanced knowledge to help you better handle resuscitation events for your pediatric patients. Using the latest evidence-based design and content, the course delivers a high-quality training program that fulfills cardiopulmonary resuscitation requirements for many healthcare professionals.

The course materials are scenario-based and a team approach is used to teach pediatric emergency management, from the early minutes through patient stabilization and/or transfer, in or out of the hospital.

Intended audience

The Heart & Stroke Foundation PALS certification program is geared toward pediatric healthcare providers who either participate in or manage resuscitation events for critically ill infants and children. This includes, but is not limited to, personnel working in intensive care, emergency medicine and critical care units — such as physicians, physician assistants, nurses, respiratory therapists and paramedics.

Method of delivery

Two ways to take PALS

Choose the format that fits your schedule. Both options are led through the Heart & Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Heart Association.

Blended

Online + in-class skills

The blended learning course consists of an online component and an in-classroom component. Learners move through PALS concepts at their own pace before attending a hands-on skills session in the classroom.

Self-directed online module completed at your own pace, anywhere with internet access.
Approximately 6 hours online plus an 8-hour in-class skills session (14 hours total).
In-person skills check with a certified Heart & Stroke Instructor.
Same 2-year Heart & Stroke Foundation certification as the classroom option.

Classroom

Fully instructor-led

In-classroom training means you are with a Heart & Stroke Instructor for the entire learning experience. The instructor-led course uses video presentations and skills practice, with the instructor observing and providing guidance and feedback in a fun and friendly environment.

Instructor present for the full course with live presentations and skills demonstration.
Approximately 14 hours, including an 8-hour in-class skills session with skills practice and testing.
Hands-on pediatric resuscitation practice with real-time coaching.
Same 2-year Heart & Stroke Foundation certification as the blended option.

What you will be able to do

Upon completion of this certification course, the participant will be able to:

Respond to a cardiovascular emergency using Primary and Secondary Pediatric Assessments.
Perform high-quality BLS skills with emphasis on effective chest compressions and early defibrillation.
Recognize and stabilize pediatric patients experiencing shock.
Perform effective respiratory management and prevent respiratory failure.
Provide care to a pediatric patient suffering a cardiac emergency.
Recognize and stabilize pediatric patients experiencing respiratory distress.
Apply the PALS treatment algorithms and flowcharts to clinical scenarios.
Provide early management of cardiac arrest with effective resuscitation team dynamics.
Evaluate your team’s use of CPR during a cardiac arrest, monitor the patient’s physiologic response and provide real-time feedback for improved outcomes.

Prerequisites

A current Heart & Stroke Foundation BLS course completion card.
BLS renewal can be completed prior to the start of the course.

PALS Provider Manual (print or ebook).
2020 Handbook of ECC for Healthcare Providers (print).
It is advised that you read the textbook in its entirety prior to the course.
Certification

Course completion card

Upon successful completion of this training, participants receive a PALS Provider certification card that is valid for 2 years and recognized throughout Canada. PALS classes are eligible for continuing medical education (CME) credits.

VIVICPR delivers this course through the Heart & Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Heart Association. The completion card is issued by the Heart & Stroke Foundation and is valid for 2 years throughout Canada.
