Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

The Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support course is highly interactive and is designed for healthcare professionals to build on Basic Life Support (BLS) skills. This course stresses the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR and takes healthcare provider training to the next level by highlighting the importance of high performing teams, systems of care and recognition & intervention of cardiopulmonary arrest, immediate post cardiac arrest, acute dysrhythmia, stroke, and acute coronary syndrome.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s ACLS Certification Course delivers:

Intended Audience

The Heart & Stroke Foundations ACLS certification course is for medical professionals who either supervise or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This can include but is not limited to personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioner, physician assistants, paramedics and others who need an ACLS course completion.

If you’re a medical professional who will use ACLS skills in your practice, it’s highly recommended that you take the ACLS course. Those who meet the prerequisites and pass the course will be issued an ACLS certification card valid for 2 years.

Evidence-based research has led to significant changes in both the content and design of the Heart & Stroke ACLS training program over the years. Through the use of the latest evidence-based design and content, it is now possible to deliver a high quality training program that fulfills cardiopulmonary resuscitation requirements for many medical professionals.

Method of Delivery:

  • Blended learning course consist of an online component and in-classroom component.
  • Some learners want to gain an understanding of important ACLS concepts at their own pace before attending the a hands-on skills session training with a Heart & Stroke Instructor in the classroom.
  • The online portion of ACLS Interim Training – Part 1 – Self-Directed can be completed in 6 hours.

  • In-classroom training courses means you are with a Heart & Stroke Instructor for their entire learning experience.
  • The ACLS Instructor-led course teaches the using video presentations and skills practice.
  • Instructor‘s observe the students, providing guidance and feedback to facilitate their learning experience in a fun and friendly environment.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this certification course the participant will be able to:

  • Respond to a cardiovascular emergency using Primary, and Secondary Assessments
  • Perform high-quality BLS skills with emphasis on effective chest compressions and early defibrillation.
  • Be able to recognize and stabilize patients experiencing Acute Coronary Events and Strokes.
  • Recognize and stabilize patients experiencing arrhythmias.
  • Understand ACLS pharmacology in the use of cardiac and respiratory emergencies
  • Recognize and stabilize patients experiencing a respiratory arrest
  • Be familiar with the ACLS algorithms and flowcharts so that you can apply them to clinical scenarios.
  • Provide early management of cardiac arrest with effective resuscitation team dynamics
  • Evaluate your team’s use of CPR during a cardiac arrest, monitor the patient’s physiologic response & provide real-time feedback to improve patient outcomes

Course Material
Please ensure you order the following required student materials:

  • ACLS Provider Manual- RE5610E (print or ebook)
  • 2020 Handbook of ECC for Healthcare Providers – RE0130E (Print Only)

It is advised that you read the textbook, in its entirety, prior to the course.

Course Format/Time

  • Blended ACLS Provider Course takes approximately 12 hours to complete, including skills practice and skills testing; 6 hours for online ACLS blended online portion and 6 hours for in-class component
  • In-classroom ACLS Provider Course takes approximately 14 hours to complete, including skills practice and skills testing
  • ACLS Renewal Course is approximately 7 hours teaching time in-class

*Online training time will vary depending on the learner.

Prerequisites

  • A current Heart and Stroke Foundation BLS course completion card
  • BLS renewal can be done prior to the start of the course
  • Complete a mandatory Precourse Self-Assessment

Course Completion Card or CPR Certification

Upon successful completion of this training, participants receive a ACLS Provider certification card that is valid for 2 years. ACLS classes are eligible for continuing medical education (CME) credits.
